Food Production & Distribution
We all know that we need to change our food system. Make it less corporate and more local. Make it less chemically intensive and more natural. Make it less polluting and more ecological. We know that. The question is how do we do it?
A study from the Carnegie-Mellon University suggests that of all the emissions from food production and distribution, the cattle are the big cause for carbon dioxide. In fact, producing the animals for food accounts for 83% of all farm emissions. That in turn is responsible for 16% of all pollution. We see the problem but what to do in a realistic and achievable way?
The study proposes eliminating red meat and dairy products from the diet for one day each week. by their estimates, it could have the same climate impact as buying all food locally for a year. Some would say get rid of all red meat. Well, that won't happen. People like what they like and want what they want. Would you want someone pulling your smoothie or sprouts off your table? No. Well guess what, either do meat eaters.
No, the smart thing is to offer up small solutions. It accomplishes two things: buys time for bigger and better ideas as well as slowly reeducates people to be more open to change. It's a start and as the old saying goes: the longest journey begins with the first step. Let's take the 'journey' together. That way we all win.
